Hot Docs Announces Made In Exile Showcase for 2025 Festival

Plans continue for the 2025 Hot Docs film festival. Hot Docs announced today that the annual national spotlight “Made In” programme offers a twist: this year’s edition will showcase docs produced by filmmakers in exile and films about people driven from their homelands.

In a release, Hot Docs notes that the shift to a global spectrum of diverse crises will share perspectives exiled from Afghanistan, Sudan, Ukraine, and Palestine, among other regions. In previous years, the Made In series focused on countries including Spain, Ukraine, Chile, Colombia, and Northern Ireland.

“This special program has been years in the making. With each festival, we’ve seen a growing number of projects addressing exile and displacement, and it feels as though we’ve reached a boiling point in history. We deeply believe in the power of documentary filmmaking to build bridges, foster empathy and bear witness to the world’s most urgent realities,” said Hot Docs’ director of programming Heather Haynes in a statement. “Through the Made In Exile program, we urgently amplify the critical work of filmmakers and participants who, despite unimaginable challenges, continue to tell their stories and bring them to the public. These are stories of survival, courage and unyielding hope that must be heard.”

Hot Docs added that the titles will be unveiled at the 2025 press conference on Tuesday, March 25. The early plans for this year’s festival, which will have a slimmed down programme offering roughly half the number of titles of previous editions, indicate that Hot Docs’ team is responding to concerns expressed by former staff and protesters alike that last year’s festival was light on politics. Many Canadian selections are locked in as well.

The festival has yet to announce its executive director following a search that began late last year. This year’s edition of Hot Docs runs April 24 to May 4.
