Hot Docs Completes Sale of Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema

Hot Docs announces sale of Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema with a lease that will allow them to continue operations at the neighbourhood theatre.
The sale for Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema is complete. The festival announced today that it sold the cinema to a local buyer with an interest in “supporting the arts in Toronto and ensuring that Hot Docs Cinema remains a vibrant cultural space.”
Hot Docs explains that this deal includes a multi-year lease, which allows the organization to maintain the neighbourhood theatre year-round. “We are dedicated to ensuring this community hub continues to bring you our outstanding lineup of documentaries, familiar favourites and special events, while remaining a welcoming space for our fellow festivals and programming partners,” Hot Docs noted in a statement.
Returning in fall are the Doc Soup series and Curious Minds Festival that engage audiences with festival circuit favourites, special guests, and speakers. The festival also announced discounted memberships would be available beginning August 19th. News of the sale may prove an incentive for patrons who’ve held off renewing amid the organization’s recent challenges.
The completion of the sale and the lease deal mark encouraging developments for Hot Docs following recent financial challenges and organizational tumult. There’s no word yet about when the cinema will resume full operations, as it continues to offer reduced screenings and showtimes as the organization recalibrates. “The Cinema sale is an important step in Hot Docs’ ongoing journey to recover and rebuild,” noted Hot Docs. “Like many arts organizations, we still face a challenging road ahead and are glad to have you with us.”
