The Art of Adventure, directed by Alison Reid, revisits the 1957 global expedition by artist Robert Bateman and biologist/filmmaker Bristol Foster. The post The Art of Adventure First Look: Revisit Robert Bateman and Bristol Foster’s World Tour appeared first on POV Magazine.

“It was like a dream trip, in a way, but at the time, it was daunting going into these countries never having been there and knowing no one and just trying to survive,” says acclaimed artist Robert Bateman in The Art of Adventure. “I guess, in a tiny way, people might view Bristol and I as adventurers in another era.”

POV has the first look at The Art of Adventure ahead of its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival. The Art of Adventure, directed by Alison Reid (The Woman who Loves Giraffes), follows Bateman and his longtime friend, biologist Bristol Foster, as they seek to reclaim the Land Rover on which they embarked on a global expedition in 1957.

Departing from the United Kingdom and travelling to far-flung corners of the world in their Land Rover The Grizzly Torque, the friends chronicled diverse aspects of life and culture for humans and animals alike across four continents and nineteen countries. Both friends blended their passions for art and science as Bateman found inspiration for his paintings, channelling the beauty of the new locales into his artwork, which included a mural on the Grizzly Torque that paid tribute to their many stops in the journey, while Foster captured the adventure on 16mm film with his Bolex.

Reid’s film shares the art of adventure with lovingly restored images of Foster’s footage, along with contemporary chats with Bateman and Foster. The friends, now both in their 90s, offer new perspectives on life, the environment, and the responsibilities entailed in representing the world through their art. As they search far and wide for the Grizzly Torque, their story finds a timeless message about appreciating the wonders of the natural world and protecting its beauty for generations to come.

The Art of Adventure premieres at VIFF on October 5. It also screens at the Windsor International Film Festival in October. The Art of Adventure opens in theatres April 2026 from Game Theory Films.
